Daggers of Death: Sugar It seems sugars found their proper place on the Food Guide Pyramid, but you know, the devil is very subtle. He always includes a bit of truth with deceit. We love sweet things and God has made us that way, but what is the best way to enjoy sweetness without harming our bodies with dead, devitalized sugar products? God has provided us wonderful alternatives: honey (raw is best with the honeycomb, propylis, and royal jelly mixed in), molasses, maple syrup, brown rice syrup, malted grain syrup, sorghum syrup, date sugar, rapadura (unrefined, unprocessed cane sugar), jams and fruit. Other sweeteners are not as good, either because they are unnatural and therefore toxic to the body or they are too expensive: fructose, sucanat, turbinado sugar, stevia, xylitol, white and brown sugar. We should avoid Splenda, aspartame, acesulfame, Equal, Nutrasweet, and any other artificial sweeteners altogether. These are totally foreign to the body and are shown to be carcinogenic (cancerous).
What to do: Raw and really raw honey can be eaten as is on breads, drizzled over salads, made into syrups, stirred into coffee and tea, or used in baking sweets. You can also use strained, heated honey for baking and cooking since it's cheaper and leave the really raw honey as a nutritional supplement. Use recipes calling for frozen and pureed fruits, and fruit juices in place of sugar. Sucanat, which is short for sugar cane natural is a great substitute for sugar because it is unrefined sugar that still contains its vitamin and mineral content. These can all be found in health and grocery stores and the food co-op.
